The Bloomfield Colliery Open Cut is located south of East Maitland and is one of the Hunter Valley’s oldest continuous running open cut operations.
Through steady growth and innovation, the Bloomfield mine continues to produce quality coal products and employs around 90 mining personnel including Mining and Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) staff.
The mining technique is a multi seam, multi bench system, mining up to 13 seams or splits, utilising a range of heavy earthmoving equipment to deliver the run-of-mine coal to the onsite washery. Coal is railed to Newcastle’s Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS). Bloomfield is a founding member and current shareholder in PWCS.
Bloomfield’s CHPP processes coal from the Bloomfield open cut and neighbouring mines, Donaldson Open Cut and Abel and Tasman Underground Mines.
The coal bearing seams mined in the Bloomfield Lease are in the Tomago Coal Measures. Located below the Newcastle Coal Measures, the seams include the Rathluba, Big Ben, Donaldson, Elwells Creek, Whites Creek, followed by the uncorrelated A, B, and C seams and the Buttai seams.
